Megabuilding Project
The Megabuilding Project was a program adopted in 1973, in anticipation for the influx of migrant workers flocking to the city for work. A total of nine concrete residential megastructures were constructed, but failed to achieve its goals as housing was and still remains expensive and hard to come by. Additionally, the tight budget and unrealistic deadlines set by the city council caused major problems in the construction of these megastructures, which frequently experiences power outages, plumbing issues, waste disposal issues, hygiene issues. The Megabuilding Complex in Gounkhã North was sold to a private real estate company in 1982, whose poor management caused the buildings to deteriorate even more. By the mid 80s, the buildings developed a reputation of being seedy places rampant with crime and vices.
In 1992, the city government repurchased the complex from the company for its Megastructure Renaissance program, which includes demolishing the more run-down Megabuildings 1, 3, 6, 7, and 9, and converting the rest as office space. The government spent 26.3 million dollars resettling the 25,000 inhabitants of the Megabuildings.
